In a factory, or industrial workplace setting, there are a variety of machines that are used on a daily basis. One machine that is indispensable to almost every manufacturing plant, or warehouse, is the forklift. A forklift, also known as a towmotor, is a truck that is responsible for lifting, and moving materials from one part of the facility, to another. Forklifts were developed in the early 20th century, and are still used extensively today. Due to the potential dangers of operating one, proper forklift training is a must. There are five hazards every driver must be trained for.

1. Forklift Turnovers - It’s estimated that one in four fatalities involving forklifts, are caused by turnovers Forklifts can easily rollover for numerous reasons. Overloading, unbalanced loads, or driving with the forks too high in the air can all cause a turnover. Some drivers have been killed while turning the vehicle as they are backing down an incline. Driving off the edge of loading docks is another frequent event that occurs, often with deadly results. All drivers are required to wear seat belts at all times, due to turnovers.

2. Workers Struck By Forklift - Workers in any factory, performing any job, can be struck by a towmotor. Speeding, employees and drivers not paying attention, and forklifts striking objects which in turn hit people, are the most common causes of impacts.

3. Victim Crushed By Towmotor - Studies show that 16% of forklift fatalities are caused by workers being crushed. Forklifts weigh thousands of pounds. Riding on the forks, unauthorized passengers, and not wearing seat belts are likely causes. Drivers should always be aware of their surroundings, especially in a new environment.

4. Workplace Environment - The shop floor itself often contributes to forklift accidents. Narrow and cluttered aisles, obstructed views at corners or intersections, and the volume of pedestrian traffic in certain work areas, can all be factors. Other things like excessive noise, toxic gases, dust making vision poor, and poor lighting must also be taken into account.

5. Improper Pallet Loading - Materials are often loaded onto wooden pallets. These are often old, and in poor repair or condition. They are sometimes overloaded, causing them to break apart in transit, spilling the load. If the pallets are loaded too high with material, the driver is unable to have the vision required to drive. Workers and management should always ensure the pallets are in good condition, and are loaded correctly.

Forklift training and safety must be practiced at all times. Certificates mean nothing, if drivers don’t use the knowledge they have learned in the classroom, on the plant floor. Safety is the most important thing in any workplace.
